Help with application forms

- Read through the application form thoroughly before you start filling it in. Often application forms have instruction sheets or instructions at the top, so it is a good idea to read these before you put pen to paper.
- Start your application form a couple of days before the hand in date, do not leave it all till the last minute.
- Get a photocopy of your form and fill out this photocopy before you do the final form. This will save on you making any unnecessary and silly mistakes, and you can save a copy for your records which will save you time on future application forms.
- Fill in the form with a black or dark blue pen. Use your best handwriting because it needs to be easy to read.
- Many application forms have a section entitled ‘other details’, in this section you must cover all the points that are asked of you in the personal specification (this should be enclosed with the application form). Make sure you mention previous jobs/courses where you have demonstrated these skills.
- In the section entitled education you are not required to include every exam you have ever sat, just include your best results or your most recent results.
- In the employment section mention why there are any gaps in your employment history, for example if you was bringing up a child, travelling or job seeking.
- If you are asked the question like “please state why you are applying for this job”, try and give an answer that will appeal to a employer, for example you are interested in the company and you feel it will be a interested and challenging role. Do not put that you are applying for the job because of pay, working hours, holidays, location or because the Job Centre made you.
